What Makes Us Different
Award-Winning Care
Hospice of Southern Maine is the only hospice agency in Maine to receive the prestigious Hospice Honors Elite Award, recognizing agencies for high quality of care as measured from the caregiver’s point of view. In addition, our quality scores on Medicare’s Care Compare website consistently out-rank other area hospices and meet or exceed national averages in all categories.
Local, Independent, Nonprofit
Why is being local important? In a word, accessibility. Our CEO, Daryl Cady, lives and works in the same community as our patients. Her office is on Route One in Scarborough. If you have a question, stop in! Our employees, leadership team, Board of Directors, and volunteers are your neighbors and friends. We are also independent from any large healthcare system, and are a 501(c)3 nonprofit. While for-profit hospices make decisions based on the bottom line, our decisions are based on fulfilling our mission to provide compassion, care, and comfort for everyone who needs us, regardless of insurance coverage or financial circumstances.
Largest Hospice in Southern Maine
For nearly 20 years, we have provided compassionate hospice care throughout York and Cumberland counties. It is not by accident that we are the largest provider of hospice services in Maine. When surveyed, 92% of caregivers rate us a 9 or 10 out of 10, and 98.5% said they would recommend us to family or friends.
Unrivaled Responsiveness
We are here when you need us, 24/7, even if you just have questions. We can admit the same day, or as soon as you’re ready. As the local hospice leader, we work closely with the area’s largest hospitals, physician practices, and specialists to transition your care smoothly.
Experts in our Field
At HSM, our only focus is hospice. All of our physicians are board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM). In addition, many of our nurse practitioners, nurses, hospice aides, social workers, chaplains, and grief counselors have specialized certifications in hospice and many years of experience in this field. We know how to provide the right care at the right time.
Broad Eligibility Considerations

Complimentary Services
Complimentary volunteer services include, but are not limited to, companionship, light housekeeping, running errands, dog and cat therapy visits, live music, Reiki, and more.
Grief Support
In addition to grief support for patients and families before, during, and after a death, our grief services are available at no cost to anyone in the community.
Environmental Sustainability
We believe that the well-being of our community is closely tied to the well-being of our environment. Our Hospice Center (main office) on Route 1 in Scarborough is powered 100% by solar and geothermal energy, with excess energy generated being sent to Gosnell to offset their energy needs. Additionally at Gosnell, we recently made energy upgrades to the heating, air conditioning, lighting, and insulation that will not only improve patient comfort, but also reduce our utility costs there by 73%.
